Overhead computer

The light in the overhead computer is so dim I can only see it at night, and sometimes I cant cant even see it good then. If I turn my headlights off then it brightens enough to read it.

Is there a trick to get them to Light up better?
Any help is appreciated.

May have something to do with your dimmer switch on the dash.

I agree about the dimmer switch. Is you dash lights bright? The reason they get brighter, it thinks you turned off the headlights because it light out.

When you turn on the headlights/parking lights, it dims the overhead display, as you've noticed. You can access a wire behind the passenger side kick panel, and unplug and cap it off, and this will keep it from dimming the display:

Also, in case your display ever fails completely, it's probably due to a resistor or two coming disconnected:

Had the same problem. Some resistors where on the edge of coming completely unsoldered. I used a pen tip and push lightly on all the resistors. Two popped loose with just a small amount of pressure. Soldered them back on and it's bright as can be. Follow the link ryaneverk2 provided and you should be able to see it again!

I had the same problem with mine. The light just kept getting dimmer and dimmer and finally completely gone. I had to replace the whole unit. Good luck.

will this undimm the dash lights when driving with headlights aswell? or only the overhead (which I don't have..)

we have a problem herer that I am supposed to drive with lights on all day, meaning that I can't read the display in the dash or the radioCD info during daytime - even with dimmer on max

Eysham.

Right on....I will try unhooking the wire as well as checking the resistors.
Thanks everyone.

I believe it only affects the overhead console that you don't have. You could always see if you have the wire, disconnect it, and see what happens.

If it doesn't affect the dash or radio display, there may be another wire to tweak to keep those from dimming, but I don't know what it would be.

FWIW, mine went dim for a while before going completly out. I'd say it's time to pull and do the repair.

Really late update, but....

I re-soldered the little 620 and 680 resistors on my computer board and now the read-out actually works and is as bright as can be.

This place has saved me countless dollars and headache...THANKS!

i just noticed this thread. what is the color of the wire or pin number in the passenger side connector that gets disconnected??

it is hard to determine which wire that is from the single picture posted.
