Short Hair Dogs In Cold Weather??

ok just a quick question for all you dog people.i used to live in texas with my 2 dobermans but recently moved to oregon and obviously its alot cooler here, especially in the winter.now i know dobermans are short hair dogs that dont have a strong undercoat so they CAN get cold easily.my question is when i do need to take them outside for there daily run and walks,do they warm up as they start to run and jump around like a human or do they stay mainly cold.i need to get them outside to get there mind working and what not,but i dont want to get them freezing cold or sick or anything.any help is appreciated

IMO in the heat of the day.

get them a sweater and boots.

On the lighter side :

Or maybe ask a mall manager if they can run the mall before it opens.

It may deter Crime having criminals see those dogs thru the door or window glass or even when they are inside casing the joint

They will be just fine. As you know many people in Oregon have dobermans & they don't freeze or get sick.

They will respond to cold just like people do. They get antsy and shiver when it is too cold. That is acceptable for a period of time and when they run around they do better. Just take your cues from their physical appearance and behavior and you'll do pretty well.

They will get quite dehydrated faster though due to the large amounts of dry air they move in and out of their lungs as they pant.

I know our Dobie does fine in the cold, but only as long as she's moving. When she goes out to do her business, she likes to sniff around and be a putz. Because of that, she sometimes walks back to the house with a funny gait (picture a funny walk from Monty Python). If she's running around in the snow, she's fine. But as Buck stated, better have that water bowl ready when you come back in. It's the first place your dog will want to go. Ours does a trip to the water bowl, then lays down in front of the fireplace. She likes it there.

Good luck to ya.
