4:10 vs 3:73

Can anyone tell me what the MPG difference would be with the 5.4 engine.

If you plan on doing any kind of towing, get 4.10s. I have 3.73s now, but I'd prefer the 4.10s. According to the on board computer, I get about 15.3 on the highway.

Really depends on your driving style and conditions, as well as what kind of truck (reg cab, crew cab, long bed, short bed, 4x4 etc.).

Like 89crewcab said, if you're gonna be towing anything, 4.10's are the way to go. Little to no difference in mileage (as reported elsewhere) and better towing capability.

If you are doing mostly city driving while towing you may even see an increase in fuel economy over the 3.73 gears.

I currently have an F250 with the 3:73 and it tows my 8500lb boat fine. I am getting ready to order a new truck and would consider the 4:10 just in case I buy a bigger boat. I just didn't want to get killed with the fuel milage. I don't understand how there can be little or no differance since the engine will be always spinning higher. Do you have actual experience with the two ratio's?

Although I don't have personal experience with a 4:10, the ratio difference is less than 10%.
A higher spinning engine, in some cases can actually be as efficient, depending on your speed & payload.

No actual experience (yet...my 4.30 rear end is sitting in my garage waiting for me), just what has been talked about in endless threads here. I've seen the reports of 1 - 3 mpg difference, and an actual mpg increase when towing in some cases. But most people with the 4.10's are reporting the same mpg numbers as those with a 3.73.

Get 4:10s or 4:30s regardless of if you tow or not. For the 5.4l and 6.8l gassers they are better than the 3:73s for overall performance. If you do 95% highway driving over 75mph than the 3:73s may be a tad better.

Around town you should see better mpg with 4:10s or 4:30s. On the highway the 3:73 will probably do a tad better (empty) mpg wise.

The 5.4l and 6.8l engines will rev and prefer a steeper gear set like the 4:10s and 4:30s. Once my truck is paid for I'm going to be swapping to 4:30s and a locker.

I have 4.10's limited slip in my 99 F250SD 4x4 with a 5.4 and I get 15.5-16.0 on the highway.

I have an 03 with a 6" lift and 35s and make a mesley 10mpg with 4.10s with a cold air intake and a hypertech programer. In town it will make probably 6 or 7. I wont ever buy a 5.4 in a superduty again. My buddies got the same thing i do but with a 7.3 completely stock and makes 18mpg. Big difference and still has more power.

I dont know why anyone hasent brought up the fact that tire size is the cheapest easiest way to change gear ratio.
I have a '75 250 HiBoy w/4:56's. When 36" tires r on she'll roll bout 65mph easy. But with 33"ers youd blow it up if you tried, but with shorter tires will never run out of snort. Point being, for the cost of gear swap, you could have 2 or 3 sets of rims and tires.
