Question Help No 4wd!

I just picked up a '99 F250SD 4x4 with a 5.4. I needed to use 4wd, so turned the **** to engage, the dash lit up normal indicating 4x4, but only the rear wheels spin. I tried 4x4 Low and Low indicator lit up, and low gears works, but only the rear wheels spin. I tried manually locking the front hubs, no good also. I notice the front driveshaft engages something (either the xfer case or front diff, but not both?). No clunking, grinding, etc. What causes the engagement on both ends of the front driveshaft? Is there a bad motor/solenoid somewhere? Thanks.

It sounds like the solenoid/motor that moves the slider to engage the front output shaft is stuck. Not uncommon. When I still had my shop, every transmission job we took in we checked the transfer case operation to determine of the fwd was working.

It was common on 4x4s 5 years old and older for the front wheel drive to not work. If we didn't check it before we rebuilt the transmission, we got blamed for it afterwards.

Ok, i'm a little new, but what symptom would I have if the front output shaft was stuck? Right now when I turn the **** from 2wd to 4wd, the indicators light up normal (no blinking), and the front driveshaft can no longer be turned by hand, which makes me think the xfer case is working...? When I manually lock the hubs, what is mechanically going on inside the hub/axle? Is it possible my hubs are shot and will not lock at all?

I can't think of any way the "front output shaft can be stuck".

Do you have manually locking hubs? Or are they actuated by the dash switch? If they are actuated by the dash switch, then you won't be able to turn the driveshaft when the hubs are locked.

Are you sure the 4wd isn't working?

I have auto locking hubs, but you can manually lock them outside the truck. From searching the forums I believe the auto hubs are activated as part of the 4wd system (when I turn the electronic shift on-fly **** to 4wd). I have turned the **** to 4wd with the hubs in auto and only the rear wheels spin (and truck goes nowhere). I have turned the **** to 4wd with manually locking the hubs, and only the rear wheels spin (ditto)... Also when I manually lock the hubs (supposedly) I can still turn the front driveshaft. What am I missing? Thanks.

Sounds like maybe you might have a broken chain in the case. Jack one front side up and spin the tire while you have the switch in 2H and the hubs locked, and see what spins. If everything spins including the front driveshaft going to the t-case, then I would have to say its a broken chain in the case.
