First Diesel

Hello all, I've been lurking here for a bit and decided it was time to ask some questions.
I'm in the process of buying my buddies 83/6 F250/350 6.9. The frame and running gear is an 83. The truck itself is a 250, but with 350 springs, it was an FS truck in a previous life, and the cab was replaced with one from an 86. The motor was rebuilt, oh ~5 years ago, but really hasn't had many miles sense. It also has the four speed, with a tag on the axle that said D70. Last year it the cab replaced, so the original build sticker is looooong gone, so that really wont be any help.
Anyways, when the truck goes over 50mph, it starts to smoke, and my buddy says ts over fueling. He's a diesel mechanic and teacher, so i belive him. Last year the IP went out, and was replaced by a junkyard pump that was from a newer 6.9. He wonders if this may be the cause. It also has a rebuilt alternator converted to be internally regulated, yet when he uses the plow, it drains the battery, but only then. I was also wondering what it would take to convert the truck to an auto, a c-6, but if an overdrive would fit...
Thanks!!!

You never know what you get from the junkyard. That truck that he got the IP from may have had a blown motor, because someone fiddled with the fuel adjustment on the pump, over heated the pistons, and ruined the engine. I would get a new pump.

Check the voltage at idle with the engine running. It should be around 14 volts if the alternator is working right.

If you want a c6, get one from a diesel and stick it in. If you want an overdrive, get a E4od from a 93-down diesel, and also the wiring and the computer to go with it.

What are your priorities? An automatic tranny?

Actually you should get a 94+ trans and the below controller eliminates the electronic stuff required...

I guess my priorites is just getting the pump isseue fixed and the plow/electrical issue worked out. Also installing new front hubs, have to check if its the 44 or 50. I'm guessing that it is the 44. i can live with the 4-sp, but for plowing next year, I;d really perfer an auto. I know a guy who is selling an 85 6.9 with a blown c-6. He said he's pretty sure its a pump seal, but you never know. I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to buy so i have all the parts i need and what not, and also has a plow on it, but he wants more for it then the one i'm buying, so.....

grass happens,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Any idea what gears are in the rear axle?
Any idea what RPM you are turning at 50 MPH?

Your problem could be injectors, the IP or the CDR valve.

As far as the electrical problem, there are 50 amp alternators that will bolt up to the engine.

A 50 amp alternator will not keep up with a plow electrical demand.
I am running a 150 on mine, I have one lot that is small, rough and tight quarters.
Plow it all at basically an idle, and have to angle, lift and drop the blade a lot.
Also have to run my work lights and headlights so I can see what I am doing.
If I stall the engine about the time I finish the lot, my truck may or may not start.
At low RPM even the 150 amp alternator can not keep up with the lights and plow demand.

I run that controller, excellent product, does as claims. Any year E4OD will work, with 1995 being a good overall setup. If you are doing to do lots of plowing, I would caution against using a stock E4OD, upgrades are available (I did a few on mine), but it gets complicated, and expencive. Much easier to swap to a C6.

hmm, so would using a smaller pulley on the alternator help? I really would like to get an OD tyranny, but with plowing, i guess the C-6 will be the route i will have to go. Will any big-block c-6 work or did the diesel have a different bell-housing pattern? I take it i will also need a flex-plate and new drive shafts? Also, will the transfer case bolt up, or will i have to get an adapter?
Thanks!

Diesel bellhousing only, it has no relation to the big block (460).

You can make an E4OD tranny survive as well as a C6, but you are going to spend a little in upgrades, and the controller/harness will run you $600 if you run the aftermarket. I have an E4OD, and I would never go back to a C6, but as the saying goes, how much do you want to spend?

Flex plates are specific to each transmission, but I was able to "mod" the C6 plate to work on the E4OD (spacer). The transfer case will work. The drive shaft will have to be changed to fit the E4OD, But I don't know how the T19 compairs to the C6 for length.
