ABS problem
I've got a 4WD '96 Bronco XLT w/ the 351 V8. About a year and a half ago, I got a warning light re: ABS failure. A trip to the dealer revealed an error code of 63.
Neither the dealer nor my regular mechanic seemed too keen on doing anything about it, and so I learned to tap my brakes in the winter.
I recently came across another post describing the same problem, and a simple solution described hitting the pump with a hammer. Believe it or not, I tried this, and the ABS light went out. I was actually able to get onto some snow and intentionally lock up the brakes, at which time the ABS kicked in, and the brake pedal "pulsed". It only worked the one time, though.
Earlier today, I tapped the ABS module again, and was again able to get the ABS to work the single time. After that, the ABS light came on, and the brakes simply locked up on snow.
Any suggestions on what the problem is, and how I can correct it. It would appear that I do not need to replace the HCU, either clean or otherwise modify what's already installed.
I know the ABS in these big rigs is a common problem, and am hoping to get some ideas about a quick, easy, or inexpensive fix.
Thanks in advance,
Joe
