Is it possible to install a 5 spd into a mountaineer? Am tired of dealing with the auto trans in this thing. Are the firewalls the same as the rangers of the same years? I realize there will be some fabricating to do. Any ideas.
You could get an M5OD out of a Ranger and swap it right in. If you have the 4.0L SOHC, you will just have to look for a newer Ranger, but even then they are not hard to find. You will need one from a 4.0L, either OHV or SOHC, as the bellhousing bolt pattern is unique.
All in all it is not a difficult swap, your best bet is just to find a complete donor and take what you need.
All mountaineers are V8's. The '97s have the 5.0. My worst worry is hanging the clutcdh pedal and drilling for the clutch master cylinder. Thank you for the reply though.
I'd suggest the Tremec T-5 then, I used it for the 5.0L swap in my Ranger and it is a good, well built transmission. Plus they came behind 302/5.0L's and can handle the power.
You could pick up a manual set of pedals from an Explorer that would swap right in, and allow the mounting of a stock Explorer master cylinder.
It is possible to put a 5 speed on the 5.0's, but you have to do tuning at the same time as the stock PCM programming will not accept a manual transmission. We (my tuner and I) have been working on a tune/program for my Explorer to accept a manual as that is one of my next projects. As far as I know, no one has done it yet, so there is no real instructions done on it to help out (yet... )
So you are having problems with the automatic? Did they just swap a rebuild, or simply replace parts? Because the auto trans can be beefed up to improve its longevity.

All '97s are V8. 98-01 they also were available with V6. They were also available in 2wd 98-01.
