750cfm.. more or less??

hey im wondering on my carb on my truck.. it is a 68 429 thunder jet with a lunati bracket master II cam I forget the exact duration and lift but I know the lift is around 543... I have an edelbrock performer manifold and an edelbrock 750 with electric choke.. the carb is getting awfully hard to adjust and floods at idle alot now.. I take it apart and clean it often but it doesnt help it for very long.. the carb is a few years old tho.. anyway the motor is in my 78 f-150 4x4 with a 4in. lift, 35s, and a 3.50 gear... the truck runs pretty good.. but im wondering if I would buy another carb. what brand should I go for and what CFM ?? oh and what kind of performance gain will I see out of a set of headers? are they well worth the 400 bucks???

I suppose you are done with the Edelbrock so maybe it's time for a Carter AFB.

A 750 vacuum operated secondary carb would be a good all-around choice. Dennis says Carter, I'd go with Holley...they all work well once you learn how to tune them.
Go for the headers if you want to maximize the potential of the cam. In fact adding headers probably made the most seat of the pants feel on my truck especialy when towing. Ford engines need all the help they can get in the exhaust department.
When you really want to get serious I'd next change the gearing. You need to install at least 4.10's to get the truck back to its original overall gearing since you installed those tall tires.

JoeyH ---

I love my Avenger 770 CFM, (and Texaco loves me...) but Harrison HAULS "mule"...if you know what I mean. 11 - 12 miles per gallon with vaccum secondaries...

Awful small guys. I run an 850 DP on most stockers & a custom 935 DP on my stock 429SCJ with better results than anything else I've tried for 25 years.

is the cam/carb/and intake all that is done to the motor? if thats true and you dont rev it out past 4000 very often i would stick with a 600 edelbrock. Good low end, very responsive and it will probably help with pulling those 35's with the 3.50 gears.
I ran a stock 429 in my truck for a long time with 36's, i tried the 750 and it just seemed to burn more gas and add a tiny bit of power above 4000 rpm. with the 600 ran much better.

i run a 750 edelbrock now with richer primary and secondary jets, along with different metering rods....but my motor is far from stock and i need it to pull 5500 with some power

I agree with qtrmiler. With Holly or other cfm formulas at 90% efficiency, 5000rpm starts at 760cfm. 5500 is 838cfm. 6000 is 874cfm.

750 is a big as Carter gets. And they're basically the same as an Edelbrock.

In my opinion, full tube headers are the best single addition you can make to a 385. With a cam, you won't realize the full potential of any cam without headers.

yes it is stock other than the cam, intake, and carb. the engine will turn about 5600 tho.... and it runs awfully damn good up in that range... but I prefer off idle torque because I could spare a little in the upper rpm range because it runs so good up there... what do U guys think about the truck avenger carb? is that to small or would it be a good carb. I dont know about a holley tho I havent fooled with them that much

Go for the 600 Edelbrock. The smaller carb will give you a little bit better throttle response. My 750 Ede. on my 460 is wonderful. Tons of torque and plenty of top end too.

I still agree with qtrmiler and mud_man. Years ago I tried a Carter 625cfm on a 460 and it was out of breath at 4000rpm. Still accelerated but going to 750cfm was night and day. If it turns 5500rpm, 850cfm is even better.
