Question about Zoo-dad mod

I want to do this mod soon. I've already got the 6637 filter, and my question is......I remember reading in a post awhile back about screens that people use to "filter" bugs, excess water, basically anything that could directly fly into your motor area. What do you guys use for this screen? Or.....is it even necessary? Pro's and Cons? Thanks guys....

I use a metal screen with a wider spacing than a standard window screen. I felt like regular window screen would defeat the mod too much with restriction. A lot of guys don't run a screen at all. I do because of the snow, pine and spruce tree needles.

The mod really helped power and economy at highway speeds. Definitely worth doing in my opinion.

You can get some small size expanded metal (aluminum) and paint it with black epoxy paint... attach with small screws with washers under the heads.

As to whether or not it is necessary is arguable... as to whether or not it is advisable, the answer is YES.

I posted some pics a while back after I found a robin (yes, a bird) squeezed into a wiring harness under my 6637 filter. I'm fortunate that the bird's beak or claws didn't puncture the paper filter element to let dirt into my turbo intake.

I had several weeks earlier seen the bird cross my path in such a manner that I KNEW it had hit the truck, but I could not find any signs of it's impact once I got home. It was only the day I posted my pics that I had my hood open, looking around, getting ready to replace my brake master cylinder when I saw feathers on my 6637 filter cover... and on the brake lines... and then I saw the dehydrated carcus of the bird on the fender well under the filter and in the wiring harness where it had been slow-baked by the nearby engine exhaust header. The only way into that location was by coming through my very large zoodad opening.

I didn't use a screen or anything. Never got any birds in there yet, a few bugs yeah but thats it. I guess it would depend on where you live. I never really felt a power differance or any better fuel ecn. like Austin did but the motor might have noticed.

I have a grill insert that keeps big stuff out.

I too noticed no improvement in performance or mileage with mine.

well I definitely think the pre-filter would help keep bugs and such off the filter, but water is my main concern.......a screen could definitely catch alot of it, not necassarily STOP it.....but definitely divert it from coming directly inside the engine bay. Any opportunity to get more air in is good

Once the factory air box has been removed the zoo-dad mod will not pressurize an open element filter such as the 6637. It will bring in cooler air (among other things), but the turbo will heat the air so much under boost that it's effect will be minimal.

If you cut a zoodad, its a good excucse to get a nice billet grill to keep stuff out of the hole.

If I remember correctly, I got it at Home Depot in the gutter section. I then just fabricated a frame for it out of 20 Ga. steel and tack welded it to it. I just slid it in the intake tube and secured it with a couple of screws.

One of my employees made a whole new intake tube out of 4" ABS that is actually pretty slick.

I also have a sheet of plexiglass that I pop in front of the opening (when I remember) for torrential rain and blizzards.

I have a prefilter for my aFe and never use it. My filter has never been wet yet after 6 yrs. so I don't sweat it too much. I might be a little more worried if I was using a paper filter though.

I'll be doing glow plugs this weekend so I'll shoot a couple of photos when I have a chance.

Here's a photo from the web similar to the way I did mine:

I always wondered if that hole called a ZooDad mod would hurt the arrow of the truck. I know its not very arodynamic to start with but you think that extra air pressure under the hood would hurt. Another good thing is that it might push some of the hot air out from under the hood.

I covered my zoodad with fiberglass screen from Lowes. It's the stuff you use for your windows in your house. I just super glued it right on there, works great. I'd rather be safe then sorry. As far as performance and all the other things, you're not gonna pressurize the 6637 but I know for a fact it atleast cooled the air going in and definitely had an affect on how my truck runs.

I do not run screen and have no problems with snow (seen the news lately), pine needles, birds..etc. If you want to screen it go to the hardware store and tell them you need wire cloth, that is what they call it,. It comes with all different size spacing.

Good Luck.
