Hey guys I started running b-5 today and I must say the truck does seem to run alot quieter and smoother! I have only put about 60 miles on since the addition of the bio but I will keep you guys informed!
I started running bio a couple af months ago. I started with b-5 and I am now up to b-33. I have noticed that the engine is much quieter and runs smoother. It gets down to the low 20's so I don't want to risk gelling. The exhaust smell is different. Smells like a burnt frying pan.
What he said! I believe we ( Barnbridge and I ) get fuel from the same place and I really like the way it runs in my truck. The station DOES put anti-gel in but I still add some PS just to be safe.
One reason that I started to use bio was that I would not have to use an additive. I was using stanadyne performance formula before I started with bio. On the bottle it says it is compatible with 5% bio. Do you guys know if it would be harmful to use it with b-33? I would think it would help with gelling on the cold days.
I started using B5 the second time i filled up in April of 2006. I have only used non biodiesel once and the truck was not as smooth or quiet. The gel point of B5 is around 0 degrees (yes I found out the hard way) so use anti-gel if there is any chance of temps that low. The station I buy from only sells B5 from Nov. 15 thru April 1, but I will use B20 all summer. When my warranty is up I will use B50 or higher because the truck runs so smooth with biodiesel.
I have tried both B5 and B20 and the latter runs SO much better. It's getting cold so I'm gonna hold off on the blends for awhile but I love how it drives a lot more with a good blend.
I started using Bio when I was on vacation in North Carolina and found B20 at a Texaco. After asking if it was ok here I gave it a try. I thought that my truck ran better on it was not convinced until I was on my way home and filled up with straight diesel. I was down to 1/8 of a tank and left the truck running it was like someone turned the volume on my truck up. When I got home I found a place that sells B99 close by and I try and run it every tank mixing it to make around B20. Much less smoke, quieter and smells better. Good stuff.
Have you guys noticed any mpg changes dino vs bio?
I want to say I've read that Bio has less energy than Dino...chime in if I'm wrong. But, I noticed about a .5 mile decrease on B20 on the lie-o-meter. I didn't run enough to actually hand calculate. I'm gonna try it in the spring/summer months with an additive.
Bio typically has a higher cetane index and burns cleaner than petroleum diesel with less smoke and soot deposits. It also has solvent properties in higher concentrations, so if anything your engine will stay cleaner on average compared to regular diesel.
