I have a 79 f150 4x4,4speed whith a early (1971) 460 in it.I put the 460 in 15 years ago.I used 351m/400 bellhousing for long style clutch,390 flywheel and clutch and put pilot bearing in small hole in crank. It has worked fine for 240,00 miles. My quesion is im rebuilding a later modle 460 (1985) with externaly balanced crank, with D0Ve heads to replace old engine.I got a flywheel off a 1991 f-350 (460) it has 180 tooth ring gear, dont know why its not 176 i think 1 tons had 180? I understand after reading previous posts this flywheel wont work in my 351m/400 bellhousing. Can i use a bellhousing off a 83-85 f-250 with 460 or does the hydraulic clutch setup they used cause problems? Or can i have the flywheel cut to the same thickness as my 390 flywheel, and drilled for 390 clutch? thanks in advance for any advice
check and see if an old style automatic starter will work, i know that the flexplate had more teeth than the manuals flywheel. the newer 460 heads dont flow as well as the older ones. i am installing a 460 into a 79 f350, and was wondering about any problems you encontered on your swap. i did a swap on an automatic about 6 yrs ago and it went really smooth. the pilot bushing was a question i had, using the smaller bore in the crank end allowed your input shaft enough clearance? how about the pressure plate to throw out fork clearance? thanks for your help.
