My wife's 2000 Navigator makes a weird whooing noise coming from the engine. It doesn't do it all the time. The vehicle also stalls when its in gear. It has even stalled at highway speeds. It has 160K and received a tune up a couple months ago, repair guy stated he changed a coil. Now it has gotten so the vehicle stalls almost everyday. We brought it back a couple weeks ago and were told the problem was in the tranny. They took transmission apart and found that the torque convertor was blue, they replaced convertor and updated transmission. We got the vehicle back and it still stalls. Any ideas?
If it randomly stalls, even at high speeds, I would look to pulleys seizing, you could get some strange noises from that as well. I know alternators will make strange noises when failing, maybe the bearings are bad in the alt and it locks up the belt, stalling the engine.
Have you removed the belt and checked to see if things are spinning freely (by turning them by hand with the vehicle off)?
