I couldnt turn the drums on my F350 with the Sterling 10.5. My school and job didnt have an adaptor big enough to fit the center hole. So I got new ones, I think they were like 65 each or so from Pepboys or Autozone.
Auto Adjusters are called Starwheels lol. But there is a propper name.
Do the auto adjusters have a good rep for working? Thats another thing I got thinking I used the the same shoes but maybe I should have installed a new spring kit?
back when I bought them ford was the only answer-they were strange size i guess??? or I was just young and dumb!!!guess I thought the dealer was the only way-boy did I wise up!!!
new springs and cables are a minor expense-just check auto zone or what ever is in your area-have had lots of problems with the adjuster cables snapping-and ruining drums!!!-they are much cheaper than drums!!!and easy as crap!!!
I anti seized the adjusters and loosened them up good the star on one side had a few teeth missing, cables were good, springs may have gone on slightly to easy, Just did an 85 Mercury Capri rear brake shoe job and those new springs were tight!!
I had one break on me, and it was sitting ontop of the star wheel for like a year till i got fed up with adjusting with a screwdriver every week or so lol. It didnt rune anything tho, i got lucky.
I love antiseize. It goes on eveything and alot of it.
just my luck the cable snaps and the big end always drops to the bottom grinding the shoe and drum!!!! lucky me!!!too late by the time I hear it!!! Damage is already done-cheaper to just replace every 2 times you change the shoes-or maybe everytime??? it's cheaper than drums!!!at $65 or more per side.
To adjust rear shoes, you should adjust the star wheel until the shoes just drag on the drums, then when you drive the truck, do several short forward and backward runs with firm braking at the end.
I didn't know this the first time I did my rears...made for a hairy ride to work the next day!
