Cooked starters, 77/460
I hate to admit it, but I dont know everything about this one!I freshened up my 77/460. Rings, Valve, Cam, chain and '0' degree gear, bearings and gaskets.
The old starter smoked right away. I got a new one from Auto-Zone and it too began to smoke. The Cable smoked, the Relay smoked, and the ignition switch smoked.
It's drawing way too much current.
I got a new starter, Relay and switch.
Smoked again!!!
I removed the plugs, did a compression test and it's way up there.(I forgot the number).
I timed the engine with the plugs out, so the starter will run it over just fine with no Compression.
I got under there an turned the crank over with my Ratchet and there's no mechanical difficulty in the engine.
It's very hard to turn over against compression though.
I put on two new battery cables. The ground connection at the block is in good shape.
Anybody have any Ideas???
What would you do next??? (Beside's leaving half the plugs out to get it started)
I think I've broken at least three plugs on the passenger side during the pulling and replacing. I'd go broke as a professional garage mechanic.
