Hello all, this may be a silly question, but just cant seem to find and answer and have been told that I have both...I would like to know a way to tell which front diff I have for sure. I have a 1977 Ford F250 4x4 (highboy?) with a divorced transfer case(np205), and what seem to be an open nuckle diff with disks on the front. How do I tell if its a dana 60 or 44? Thanks to all.
yea, but someone coulda put it there. mine has a 60 under it. the hubs on the 60 will be huge. look at the rear dif, then look at the front. if theyre the same, its a 60. if not, its a 44
Yeah but some of the HD44s in the highboys use the same lock outs as the 60s. And when i said look at the balljoints i was taking into consideration that it could have been swapped in also.
The D446CF is often mistaken for a D60 because it has the big hubs. A real D60 is hard to tell just by lookin at the hubs. Go with the kingpin vrs balljoint reference.
The Only way to tell for sure is to look(facing the front of the diff) and on the bottom corner of the diff houseing there will be a casting number that says 44, 60 or 61. A On a Dana 44HD everything from the Knuckles out (so im told) is dana 60 parts
I have the open knuckle, big hub Dana 44 in my 77, but just aquired a Dana 60 out of a 79 F350. Would the rotors and caliper brackets bolt on from my 44 to the 60?
In theroy they should. One way to double check would be to get the part numbers for the rotors and see if they are the same, as for the brakets they are unavalible and you would have to physically check

Why not use the entire D60 and shorten your driveshaft?
Everthing from the knuckles out huh. I'm in the process of taking taking parts off a 77 f-250 and putting them into my 78 f-150. I just removed everything down to the spindles today and was curious exactly what the differences are. I have yet to pull the f-150 apart and will prob do that tomorrow. I have already cut the dana 60 out and that will be going in the rear. I was hoping to use my f-150 steering setup because i don't think the f-250 setup will work with the f-150 pump. Any input would be wonderful.

..........quick and easy..... look at where your pitman arm (steering from box to knuckle) attaches to your axle on the drivers side..... 3 bolts in a radius = Dana 44... 4 bolts in a rectangle or square pattern = Dana 60... 70's Ford, Dodge or Chev they are all the same....hope this helps Evan
