Question Over/Under Drive.

Ok, I trust you guys with my truck. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. I drive a 2000 F-250 CC 44 7.3 PSD 6 speed manual. It has more than enough power for towing. But as far as cruising on the interstate it lacks a bit in economy. I was watching trucks on spike tv, and they were talking about an over/under drive unit from us gears. I did some checking and found that they do make them for my truck. I was just wondering if you guys know anything about them. And whether or not it would be a worth while investment. From what I understand it basicly converts it to a split gear set up. Sorta like a 2 speed axle. So instead of having 6 speeds I would have 11. Is this correct, and if so what would be involved in the install? Thanks for any input and help with this, Micah

I am considering the same thing; I found this site: http://www.gearvendors.com/f2wd4s.html and called them on the phone, they were very helpful. I really don't know much more at this point. I was considering it for a new F450 I will be ordering soon, but Ford has just changed the gearing so it may no longer be necessary for me.

I believe there's an older thread about gearvendors, maybe you could do a search. Seems like you could certainly be done, but its not necessarily cost effective. But then, gas was probably cheaper then...

Thanks for the input. I'm gonna do a bit more checking. I love the Idea, just not the price. 90% of my driving is on the highway, so it would be nice to have. I'll let you know if I figure anything else out.

If your machanicly inclined, the install doesn't sound to difficult. I'm looking into a gear vender I don't think that your going to save enough fuel cost to pay for it but I think in overall it may pay for itself in comfort and lower rpm of the motor. Just my 2cents.

I'm not really expecting for it to pay for its self. I mainly just want to be able to get the rpms down while empty on the highway without losing any towing proformance. With this unit it seems like I would be able to do both. Also as far as the drive shaft is concerned I'm pretty sure it would need to be changed. Would it have to be custom made, or is there one available to replace it with?

I purchase the gearvendor for my 2000 sd V10 4x4 with 3:73 gears. At 70 without gearvendor runs around 2500, with gearvendor @ 70 runs around 1600. With gearvendor I get around 12-13gpm, without around 10-11 gpm. Pulling mt 5th wheel @10,900# 5-6 gpm.

I believe that all that you have to do with the shaft is have it shortened at your local machine shop.Around here they shorten and balance shafts for around $150 and the yoke come with the kit from gear vender.

I had a new shaft built and the cost was $200, This way I could keep the old shaft, if I sold the truck I could keep the gearvendor for something esle.

I think I like that second option a little better. I would like to be able to go back to stock if I ever do want to sell it.

Never thought of that. A very good idea.
