This is primarily for anyone who hasn't done this yet. My local service guy and diesel tech just told me about a turbo failure they worked on. Both of these guys have 7.3s and both have the 6637 mod. The guy whoes turbo failed had done the mod, but hadn't gotten the 6637 filter. It looked the same, but it had some internal rings (it was designed to have a pipe slide up inside it). He installed it, fired up the truck and sucked those rings loose and into the turbo and well... I think you can guess the rest. I just thought I'd pass this along as a caution so anyone who hasn't done it yet knows to check.
The tech didn't tell me what the part number was for the filter that caused the problem. He said it looked like the 6637 (he has one on his own truck), but had internal "rings" that would have gone around a tube and those rings are what detached from the inside of the filter an sucked into the turbo.
I wonder if the guys thought they had the 6637, but the parts store gave them the wrong ones. Guess we need to look inside the filters when we buy a new one for the rings. I would think it would be easy to notice.
Some of these filters go on vehicles with a second fine filter inside it. I'll bet that has something to do with it. Here is a similar one for a Bobcat -- it has another filter that looks something like a roll of string wrapped on a paper towel cylinder this one slides over (wish I had a pic of it!):
You may be right Joe. He (the service guy) said the filter had "rings" inside it that would have fit over a tube (or like you said an internal filter).
Max, Ron... you might be misunderstanding my post. It's not a caution against doing the mod (notice my signature), but to make sure that you definately get the 6637. This guy apparently either thought he'd gotten the 6637 or went cheaper and got something he thought would work. In either case it went bad for him. I just wanted anyone who hadn't done it yet to make sure they got the 6637 (not something else) so they wouldn't have any problems.
