What is it?
Stupid questions here.
I have a '79 460 that has a bright metallic object on the very top and rear of my block (not manifold). It is threaded and has an electical connector on top.
1. Is this the sender for my oil pressure idiot light?
2. Can I plug into this for an after market pressure guage?
3. Could I use that wire to supply 12 volts to my new edelbrock electric choke?

Bob,
>1. Is this the sender for my oil pressure idiot light?
Yes, sounds like your oil-pressure sender (about 1.5" tall, with a
threaded connection on top for a wire, right?).
>2. Can I plug into this for an after market pressure guage?
Nope. IF you have an idiot light, attaching an electrical oil pressure gauge to your current sender will not work. However, when you buy the electrical oil pressure gauge it should come with an electrical sender (which will thread in place of your current sender unit. They look the same). I bought my 68 F100 pretty cheap b/c the previous owner had hooked the oil idiot light up to a sender for an electrical oil pressure gauge. He couldn't figure out why the oil pressure light glowed all the time (except at start-up). The higher the oil pressure got, the brighter the oil light glowed.
>3. Could I use that wire to supply 12 volts to my new edelbrock >electric choke?
I don't think so. Someone else want to jump in here...?

for the electric choke, i hooked mine up to a 12 volt source i found in the harness for the wiper motor on the back firewall. its not the most elegant location but it does have 12 volts only when the engine is running which is what you need.

On your second question (can I plug into this for an aftermarket pressure guage). Yes you can. Remove the idiot light sending unit, install a threaded t connector, put your idiot light sending unit on one side of the tee and your oil pressure line on the other side of the tee. Presto. Factory idiot light still works, and you now have an oil pressure guage.
