In the process of assembling a '70 302 short block I discovered that the new full roller-type timing chain seems to have excessive slack. With one side of the chain pulled taut, the slack side has a deflection of about 5/16". Seems to me that either there's a problem with the new chain, or the block may have been align bored at some point. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Anything I may not have thought about? Anyone know where I could find the dimension from the cam to the crank, or know of another way to tell if the block has been align bored?
Did you find out the problem with the timing chain? I ran into the same thing with my 83 5.0 H.O. engine, i figured it may have been aligned honed also. I haven't run the engine yet but i think it will be ok. I am running an edelbrock double roller. Also my fuel pump eccentric hit the back of my timing cover, glad i found that before starting it up.
The timing gear has a raised area that the stock double roller didn't have causing it to hit the back of the cover. I called the tech line and they said the engine probalbly had the wrong cover on it, but i don't think so. I shaved the eccentric down to clear the cover, hope that will be ok.
