Guys...I have had it...my 2005 6Leaker has been in the shop 7 times in the last 6 months, issues have ranged from turbo, coolant, tranny, 4x4 operation...I am just done with it. I don't have a need for a 3/4 or 1 ton but I am 6"8" and I fit in the crew cabs easily. Plus...I just dig the big rigs.
I am going to order a 2008 F350 CC LWB (SRW) V10 auto. I tow a couple times a year, usually a couple of atvs and camping gear...I live in Colorado and when I tow, its in the mtns up/down some big grades. What gears should I order... 4.10 or 4.30?
What kind of mpg can I expect with this awesome monster?
How will this truck differ in power/drivability vs the 6L?

................I have a guy in my RV park now who has the V10 in a F350 extended cab short bed single rear tire's with the 4:10,he's pulling a 39 ft 5'th wheel with 4 slide's and love's it,say's he has no issue's climbing hill's here in the east,out west at high elevation's and thin air 4:30's would be a good idea,i'ed go with the 4:30's if it was me,forgot to say he's getting around 9 MPG towing-14 empty.
I went with the 4:30 on mine. The mileage is not that much different and you will have a little more torque. We have towed our 8K travel trailer in the mountains with absolutely no problems. Lot of the guys here that have the 4:10 ratio have indicated that they would probably go with 4:30 next time.
I have the 4.30's on mine. Remember, 2008's have either 18'' or optional 20'' wheels so 4.30's will behave like 4.10's on older SD's with the 16'' wheels.
I don't know whether the industry has caught up yet, but in 2005 18" tires were available as an option on some models, as opposed to the standard 17". I constantly see post after post from people lamenting the lack of choices for the 18" tire.
Jdogg, my previous 3 Superduties were PSDs. 95 and 2000 solid 7.3s
Then in 04 I got hung with a sick-oh and got to meet a lot of haul truck drivers who love the 6.0 It was great for their business.
My 05 4x4 CC LB V10 has 4.10s and I am pleased with them and love the V10. The 3 valve torqueshift is an awesome tow combination. I tow a 12000 pound 13 ft high Montana Fifth wheel, 6000 miles a year, lot's of power and get from 7 to 9 miles per US gal depending on wind or grades.
Empty on my short 9 mile commute to work which is mostly 45 MPH curvy back road I am averaging 11 MPG. This commute with my 6.0 was about 13 MPG so I am happy.
Most of the the people on RV forums that tow a rig like mine with a 6.0 get around 10-11 so the V10 is a great choice for many RVers.
I think the older 2 valve 4 speed auto needed 4.30s a lot more than the 3 valve 5 speed T/S does. Having said that I just got new Michelin A/T2 285/65 tires that have that 3640 pound weight rating that the OEM Contis had and I need that rating to keep my 7000 pound rear axle rating. My fiver has a 2600 pound pin weight , I have an aux tank in the bed and I need the 11200 lb GVWR that the 3640 tires give me.
The new tires are slightly lower, about 1/2 " and using the tire calculators this has changed my gears to 4.17s. I would have rather stayed with the stock 275/70s but they are all on back order and I found these 285s so I grabbed them. I expect my gas mileage to go down a little.
This 4.10-4.30 discussion has many people voicing strong opinions on the superiority of the 4.30s when in actual fact, numerically speaking these two sets are very close and Ford should have probably offered 4.10s and 4.56s for people that want to tow real heavy or go to higher tires. There is no way I would own a Ford V10 with towing gears if I did not tow. I have said before, for people that want the luxury of a V10 in a Superduty and just want to tow a small boat or tent trailers 3.73s make sense.
This engine makes more torque than the first generation PSDs.
The 4.10s even with 18 " wheels are deeper geared than the 3.73s and 16" wheels and yet we have many 2V guys with 3.73s that are happy with them.
Either set, will please you, but expect the 4.30s to cost you a wee bit more fuel when driving solo. Towing probably not . This is my opinion only and not intended to pi$$ people off that have paid big bucks to put in deeper gears.
I can imagine the V10 will have much better driveability then the diesel. you wont need to warm it up as long, its much quieter,and it wont be in the shop every week... knock on wood.
I will be towing more than you 32' 5th wheel, @9,000 lbs, I went with the 4.30 on my V10 CC I ordered, which is done, and should eb delivered this week. The difference in mileage is small, and the 4.30 will give you somewhat of a mechanical advantage and help the wear and tear on the motor and tranny, but either way I am sure that you will be happy and it will meet your needs. Differences from your 6.0, like others said: quiter, less maint, cheaper oil changes, ect...I don't think you can go wrong and its only a $600 option.
I have a 07 F-350 CC SRW 4x4 with a V-10 auto. I ordered with the 4:10 LS and that is my only regret with the truck. I lifted the unit and am running 35" tires so I have magnified the gear ratio issue for myself. I pull a 36' 5th wheel and the odd toy hauler in the Rocky Mtns of Alberta and BC. I've pulled with both the stock tires and the new 35" tires. The truck handles it very well but I would go 4:30 on the next one. Even if I did not run larger tires. I still might even go 4:56 but only because I can't leave a truck in stock form. Wife thinks I have issues
I have the older 2V with 16" rims and 3.73's and I tow a 35' tag RV (10k lbs/1700lbs tongue weight) a couple times a year no problem. Plenty of grunt and hill climbing for around here. I get around 9 mpg towing and around 11mpg empty driving (loaded with my tools and a 7800 lbs scale weight) and I have a heavy foot.
I think you should go with the max to save on burdening the truck too much. I'm a firm believer in overkill when it comes to having a choice to do so. Oh, and stick with the 6.8, you'll love it, especially when you can stop anywhere for gas!!!

Our previous F350 was a 05,CC,LB, Dually, V10 with the 4:30 Diff. For how you are using the truck I would think that the V-10 will meet your needs.Since you are not pulling much I would consider the 4:10Diff for a bit better MPG. We pulled the biggest grades in Colorado and our V-10 and with some high RPm's , did the job. We ran solo in high altitudes, Estes Park, Etc, and noticed little loss in Performance. For as little as you tow IMO a diesel is not justified. We now have the 6.4L since the way we use the truck has changed but the V-10 did the job for us. I hesitate to talk about MPG since where and how we drive these things varies so much.. Towing 13K plus in high altitudes and steep grades we did as low as 4/5 mpg and averaged through a tank of fuel around 7.5/8.0 not bad at all.
