Used my truck this week to pull a light trailer and load...now I got a funny noise I've never heard before...
It's a chirping noise...between 35 and 55 mph....same pitch and same pace....doesn't increase or decrease with engine rpm...not present below 35 or at idle. It's an '03 7.3 4x4 with 95,6 on it.
Any ideas or information is greatly appreciated...thank you all!!!
did the trailer have brakes? sometimes when i pull a trailer with no brakes my brakes will squeak for a couple weeks then there silent again(to much stress on just the truck brakes i guess). you might want to check you u-jounts in your driveshafts and the carrier bearing if you have one.
Did this happen primarily when the engine was under a load, probably below 1800 or so RPMs? If so this is called turbocharger compressor surge. It happens when the turbo is producing boost and the engine is not spinning fast enough to "eat" up the incoming air, The stock design on the turbo is far from efficient as the wheel and housing is not matched (to make it quieter in stock form). Either you change out the wheel for $60 and "move" the point at which it surges, or you replace the housing for $400 to mechanically eliminate the surge issue. Or, if you want to experiment this, if you have it occur again, downshift a gear and see if it goes away.
