Question Help with a 302 H.O.

Hello everyone, I have a 1977 F100 with a 302 5.0. I am looking at turning the truck into a street/strip vehicle. I have also recently purchased a 1988 Lincoln Mark VII with a 302 H.O. motor. The Lincoln motor only has 57,000 miles on it. I am looking for any help with this motor build.

Here are a few things I have done to the original motor in my F100.

Headman Headers
True dual exhaust into dual Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 series with turn downs
New 8mm plug wires
New NGK plugs
Aluminum dual plane air gap intake manifold
Holley 650 double pumper HP
MSD blaster 3 coil
14in open air breather
Polished valve covers

I am getting ready to purchase a MSD distributor, MSD 6AL ignition and I have a set of GT40-P heads. Everything on the original motor will be swapped to the H.O. motor.

What type of roller cam should I purchase and what else should I do? I have a C4 tranny which is getting ready to under go a rebuild along with a new valve body and shift kit and a rebuilt Ford 9" rear end. What gears should I put in the rear, and yes I will be driving this truck everyday.

Any help would be much appriciated, Thanks.

Spend your ignition money on something worthwhile. The MSD system isn't any better than the Duraspark the 77 has now. You will need either a cam gear swap for the roller cam, or just go to your local parts house and buy a reman 85 Stang distributor (1985 with manual transmission) It will already have the steel gear for the cam and plug right back into your harness. Swap the 650 DP for a 570 Street Avenger too. The 650 is too big. Cam ? I'd go with the Ford Racing F303 and swap the rockers for 1.7 full rollers. For a daily driver, gear ratio needs to take into account the tire size too.

Smart, smart choice. I own an 86 Mustang GT with a 5.0 HO engine. It's nice.

Although the C4 is a good tranny, the AOD in that Lincoln is a better tranny.

You might want to check out www.corral.net, those guys have been tuning 5.0s for years. You're on the right track with the GT40-p heads, but it takes some careful work with the headers; the spark plugs are the issue. Some people stay with the stock cam. You might find that the stock 5.0 HO engine is pretty peppy as-is. Tuning the ECU might be all you need.

I don't consider either particularly tough. Both are weak sisters in stock form.
