A little over a month ago I bought a '93 F-250 w/460 engine (80,000 miles). I bought the truck "as is" from a dealer. During the next 3 weeks the truck burned 7 qts. oil and the dealer said to bring in in and he would install new rings. In the shop they found the cylinders badly scored so elected to replace the engine with a low mileage '97 460 (30,000 miles and w/warranty - cost the dealer $2500 for the engine and the install). The shop doing the install omitted the cat system saying it wasn't necessary. After putting several hundred miles on the engine it is running quite strong, I guess the chip has been tuned-in.
Questions:
Is the cat system necessary? Are there any issues that I should be aware of?
BTW, I used to sell cars many years ago and NEVER had any of my employers take such a considerate step for the consumer. Great guy to buy from, heh?
I'm assuming you mean catalytic convertor by cat system. If so, if the dealer removed it, that is actually against the law nation wide. It's not really bad for the engine, but it is bad for you, as the cat burns benzene in the gas, which is EXTREMELY cancerous. Without the cat you're just blowing benzene gas out the back.

Ya mon, just buy a 3" CATCO convertor for like $55 and weld in the exhaust and be legal. It won't hurt the power or sound at all and you'll have the peace of mind of being legal.
Well hay, its "the law"!! lol, I just couldn't resist. You can run without cats as long as there isn't emmition tests in your state. that is the way I bought my truck and they way im going to keep it. Sounds nice too
I currently own 5 benzene-belching monsters. Only 2 of them came factory with 'em. Could never afford new ones at the time the exhaust needed replacing, so off they fell...
Besides, Canada needs some bad air; too clean here right now...
