flyinbrian04 needs help with a 360

thanks for the previos info but i forgot to post some stuff that might be important. from what i can tell it's a 2.89 gear with an auto trans. I have a factory cast iron 4 barrel manifold and a 600 or 650 holley carb. not real sure on the carb its a new one and i was told it is a marine carb#R84018 vac secondarys. would like to know how to get some extra power out of it without getting nuts. I plan on using headers but i don't know what cam to use. the moter was rebuilt befor i got it and i assume everything is standard in it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ford never offered a 2.89-1 gear ratio in anything.

1967/72 9 inch axle ratios commonly available: 2.75-1 (mostly seen only in cars); 3.00-1; 3.25-1; 3.50-1; 3.73-1; 4.11-1.

Zero 2.89's. I've never even heard of that ratio.

I'm going to take a better look at the tag, maybe take it off. Also i was wrong on the carb, turn out it's a 750cfm maybe too much for the set up. I really want to use it because its polished.

A 450 or a 600 cfm Holley, or any other similar sized carb is just about the right size for your 360. You'll get better throttle response due to higher air velocity in the smaller carb. That's part of the reason your 360 seems sluggish - low air speed through the 750's bigger bores.

Read some more in this forum. The 360 is a real pooch (relative to what you should be able to get out of a 360) in stock form, so if yours was rebuilt with the sunken pistons at TDC and low compression, think twice about putting a lot of money in it. True, a smaller carb will provide better throttle response and perhaps slightly better MPG, but the things that limit power are inside the motor in the heads, pistons, and cam.

As for headers, those babies are good for higher rpm. Consider a good dual exhaust system with the balance tube, if you need pipes.

Good luck.

There are some things that you have to keep in perspective. The 360 is a destroked 390 truck only engine that was one of the first attempts of dealing with new emissions standards. The 360 like the 352 has plenty of power for a truck.
For hot rodding, the 390 is a much better base package and the things that have been mentioned are better planned for a build rather than piecemeal add ons. IMHO

I had a 65 F250 with a 352 that was rebuilt to stock, just like your 360. I yanked the original 2 barrel setup and added an Edelbrock perfromer intake and Edelbrock 600 cfm carburetor, and converted the stock single exhaust to 2 1/4 inch dual exhaust with Hooker Arrow Chamber mufflers and it was like driving a totally different beast. It ran much stronger and smoother. I think a similar setup would be a strong starting point for you, and if you decided to swap in a 390 later you could still use the intake and exhaust. Just my two cents!!

You will find that on a stock 360 the 750 is way over sized. You could disconnect the secondaries and run it as a 2 barrel. But I do not know how much the pri would deliver.

A 500cfm is more in line of what you need.
