Well that sucks. Just rigged up a way to pressure test my system from turbo to plenums to try to find out where that new hissing sound is comming from and it turns out to be a big leak in the plenum right under my newly rebuilt turbo. Thought I blew it on the rebuild untill I saw all the soap bubbles comming from the plenum. Dose any one know if ill be able to take the compressor side off the turbo to get to the plenum. What do I need to seal it? I can see there is no gasket just what looks like grayish RVT. I also noticed a nice size pin hole in the weld on the Y pipe. Its a easy fix, Ill just hit it with the mig welder. Have others had problems with the Y pipe?
The y pipe is no big deal. My main concern is the plenum. What is needed to seal it? If I can get to it by taking out the compressor side the turbo the y pipe is going to come out anyway, just tack it with the mig. I need a good sealant for the plenum and I am not sure what will be able to hold up to the heat, presure, and fule. I am not going to want to have to do this again so any suggestions on sealant would be great.
There really isnt a temporary fix for that. Even if you hit it with a good grind to get the rust off for good adhesion, the way the temp fluxuates on those is so great that the JB will expand and contract faster than what the metal does, causing it to work itself loose. Check with a auto parts store to see what the temp rating is for that insta tailpipe fix. Its a putty too, but made for much higher temps I THINK. Not real sure on it though, so dont hold it against me....LOL
Sorry if I did not make myself clear but I want to take the plenum off and reseal it with something like whats already on there. Would I be able to get the stuff ford uses?
you'll probably have to pull the turbo off. Then break the plenum loose with a putty knife and clean the head up good with brake clean. use a grinder with wire wheel to clean up the plenum then hit everything again with brake clean to ensure its good and clean then seal it back up with gray rtv.
