Oil Pressure

At Startup On My F-150 4.2 V-6, The Oil Pressure Warning Light Stays On And The Pressure Gage Reads 0. After A Munute Or Two, The Light Will Go Off And The Gage Will Read Normal. Sometimes The Light And Gage Will Go On And Off A Few Times Before Stabalizing. Has Anyone Had This Problem? Solution Please.

You need to check the oil level first of all. Then check the oil pressure with a good mechanical oil pressure guage. If the oil pressure is good, then your oil pressure sending unit is bad and will need to be replaced. You may even consider installing a good oil pressure guage in the truck since the guage in the dash is a glorified idiot light. It indicates in the middle of the range if the oil pressure is more than a few PSI. Otherwise it indicates zero oil pressure. Good luck!

WENDOV, Yes first check your oil level.

What year is your F150? My '01 5.4 4X4 SCREW had the same problem. My mechanic showed me a TSB that indicated that the oil pressure sending unit is to close to a proctective skid plate. When the engine is cold it would rock and shake more so than when warm. Once the engine was warm, oil pressure was normal (engine settles). The sending unit was banging against the plate and breaking contact. He cut a half moon out of the plate giving about 1/2 in clearance, installed a new sending unit and I have never had another oil pressure problem since.

Had the same problem with my 2000 5.4, changed the sending unit as per TSB 2 weeks ago, no problems since. This truck did not have the plate that needed to be trimmed, only bad sender.

I have the same issue were it is off and then on and then off and so on. The mechanic that i talked to while they were diagnosing a bad coil said that it is not even worth fixing and if i wanted to do it right i would just put in a normal oil pressure gauge. I have had the truck for four years and nothing bad yet.
