As for rust and painting….
I just bought stove paint (see my thread) from Lowes. I sprayed it twice. The weather wasn’t ideal – it was cold and humid – but the paint covered well. It seems to holding up really well. It is about the only thing on the underside that is NOT rusty. Have you taken a look at your drive shaft ?!?!?!? I can’t remember the exact price, but I seem to remember it being like HALF of the 304 stainless. I don’t think it will ever rust though completely but I look at it like this: I can buy TWO of these for the price of the higher end stainless and I kinda like the looks of the black.
