Mirror controls

Hi all,

I am now just starting to familiarize myself with my newly acquired X and had a few questions regarding a problem that i need to address.

As an FYI, i have a 2000 LTD 4X4 V10 with the smaller non-telescoping mirrors.

The movement controls for the DS mirror does not work (The PS does however work). The mirrors are heated (Or at least the X is equiped to have heated mirrors).

Last night i started taking apart the DS door panel and noticed that there were some support inserts broken as well as the 2 screws that hold it to the door frame were missing (The DS door panel was loose to start with).

I am thinking that perhaps the mirror was replaced a while ago for whatever reason and as a result of this, the controls now do not work. So, i am trying to figure out why.

Questions i have are:
  • From what i can see, there is one connector for the mirror remote. The wires are then taped with the rest of the wires from the door armrest controls (Windows,etc..) and heads into the door frame. From the actual mirror unit, is there a connector that connects up to the other end of the wires that go to the control? Or does one have to untape everything because the mirror unit connects directly to the control?
  • Are the mirrors easy to remove?
  • Is there anyway to tell whether or not the mirror i have actually accomodates the heating option or not (I.E. differences in part numbers).?
  • If the controls work for the PS mirror, then can one assume that the problem lies either in the wiring or the actual mirror for the DS?
  • Is it a direct swap to go to the larger telescoping mirrors?

Cheers,

I think my original heated mirrors have the little heating symbol on the mirror glass itself.

The previous owner may have replaced a damaged mirror with the cheaper, non powered version, thus nothing is hooked up.

I know you can replace the mirror glass w/ heated glass, but you would probably have to replace the entire assembly to get powered mirrors back.

the mirrors should have the "heated" symbol on them, if not, they are standard....the X should be wired for all options regardless of what is installed...most vehicles are..its too much hassle to run different harnesses for all the different trim models...hope this helps!

No, I believe you will need to have an adapter for the wiring harness... At least that is what I had to do to put TT mirrors on my 99 Super Duty.

BTW... I have a perfect set of the smaller non-TT remote mirrors, OEM (non-heated) from my old Super Duty I'd be willing to part with... (PM me if you are interested).

Well, after mucking about yesterday, I have been able to determine a few more points...

1 - The mirror on the DS does not have the heated symbol on it, like the PS does.
2 - I pulled off the door panel / sound barrier and there seems to be two plugs coming from the mirror unit, which both plug into cables within the door cavity, near the mirror wire entry point.... I presume that this cable then works its way to the switches attached on the door panel insert..

Now, since the truck is equipped from the manufacture with heated mirrors, then i presume that one connector is for the controls and the other is for the heated mirror part... Since the mirror that is currently set up has connectors going to both,
A - Why is it not working OR
B - If it does not have heated symbol, then what does the 2nd connector do?

What is the process to remove the mirrors? I signed up for Chilton's online this morning and was very disappointed that there is no section for "Body" for the 2000 Excursion and so i am unable to look up how to take the mirror off...

I have a 2000 X that had the smaller, remote powered heated mirrors. They were fully functional when I removed them. I replaced them with the larger towing mirrors. I'd be willing to part with the originals if you're interested.
