4.56 gears too much?

Now that I've got my truck running well I'm considering re-gearing as the next improvement. I'm towing about 10k pounds and looking for any improvement I can get. I have 3.73's now with 33" tires.

I was going to go to 4.10 or 4.30's but now I'm considering 4.56's. I figure with the 33" tires, that will about the same as a 4.30 truck with stock tires. I mostly use my truck for towing or just around town on the weekends so I'm not too worried about the mileage negatives, if any.

What do you guys think, are the 4.56 gears too much for my setup?

I think it is a good combo. I used to have a jeep with 33's and 4.56 gears and it was a workhorse and if I remember correctly 70 mph was about 3100 rpm at 1 to 1 (No overdrive)

For a dedicated tow rig 4:56s on the V10 should work well. 4:30s w/33s should be around 2300-2400rpm in OD at 70mph, 4:56s will rev slightly more.

My opinion is that 31" tires with 4.30's is the PERFECT match for the V10 for powerband utilization.

With your 33" tires the 4.56's would put you smack dab there so that's what I would do.

I HAD 3.73's but have stock 265/75R 15" on my Ex (30.6")

Using the following calculator https://www.ford-trucks.com/calculat...re_sizes/a-td/ you can see that if you enter a diameter of 30.6" and 32.8" and a ratio of 4.56 you end UP with a 4.25...

My STRONG opinion is for pulling the V10 really appreciates the deeper gears...so if you are popping for a gear swap with those larger tires...go 4.56 and you will NOT be disappointed...but that is just my opinion from someone that has had 3.73's and is now very very happy with 9000#'s behind the V10 with 4.30's...

RPM wise my 4R100 (remember my Ex only has the 4 speed) runs ~2200rpms in 4th gear at 65mph and ~3000rpms in 3rd gear at 65mph. The PERFECT rpm for pulling STEEP grades with my 2V V10 is 3200rpms...which for me means 70mph in 3rd gear. I have pulled 5 mile 7% grades at 70mph IF (big if) I hit the hill at 3200rpms with my 4.30's. With the 3.73's...well the V10 fell on her face and requried 2nd and sometimes 1st!

Good luck,
joe.

Hello everyone:
New to the forum:
Been reading alot of the threads on the Exs & V10s.
Just picked up my first Ex V10,Eddie bauer Edition 4x4 27k miles.
love the truck ,accept it felt like slug on the onramps and on city streets.
so i decided in order to move a vehicle that weights over 7k you need to get rid of 3.73s for starters.switch to the eaton limited slips for the front and rear and 4.56 gears and BF goodrichs KOs 317-70 -17 (35s) tires. and i'll tell you that this thing runs like a (Raped Ape) now,( equal to my F450 PSD before the Banks kit) acceleration improved by at least 30% and still able to cruise at 60mph at around 2000 rpm.before it would take about 100yd to get up to 50-55 mph, from a 20mph roll on the onramps, now it does it in less than half the distance. can't seem to find any engine Mods to improve power, accept from a few Chip companies outthere and Super charger kits were only available up to 2003 from various companies (Vortech-Paxton-Kenny Bell).still doing some RnD into the superchargers.if not will go with the Banks kit,but it is pricy considering the 50hp gain that their claiming. $2000+dollars.
any thoughts from you guys.
will post some pictures this week.

Thanks
Will

I swithed from the 3.73's to the 4.30's with 31" stock tires. The change made a big difference, BUT I wish I'd gone to the 4.56's. So like x-hemi-guy said you'll be fine.
Happy Towing!!

I am running 32s with 4.56s and love em! Based on my results, I would have no problem running 4.88s if I could do it again.
