Cold Start Woe's

It has dropped down into the low teens the past couple nights and havent had a chance to plug the ole 7.3 in. I started it the past two mornings with great difficulty. I had to turn over the motor for a great length of time with white smoke coming out heavealy. And when it did start the white smoke continued for about 5-10 seconds and the rpms were going from about 400 to 1000 and back down and up for about 7 seconds before the idle smoothed out. What do you guys think the problem is? Are the glow plugs bad?, do I need a new glow plug relay? If I do have to replace the glow plugs what else should I replace when it is torn apart? Also one last question, is it possible to wire up a high idle switch on a early 99 7.3?

Sorry left out some important facts, my truck has 189,000 miles on it. I am running Rorlla 15w40 just because I live in Atlanta and it normally doesn't get down into the teens very often. Call me stupid but what is the EBPV? I have tried to leave them warm up longer but it seems to make it even worse because it seems to lose juice to crank over with. Sounds strange to me, but any help would be nice.

EBPV is your Exhaust Back Pressure Valve. It sounds like at the very least you have a weak battery issue if you are cycling the glow plugs and getting "less" juice to crank it over and the symptoms seem to get worse. The first thing I would do is replace both batteries with at least 850 CCA units and see if that helps the situation. If not then you may have a GPR or glow plug issue.

make sure your battery connections are all clean and both test good..then read this post and start checking the GP's..you got a bad relay..or bad GP
