'79 block, '73-up pedestal heads. Maybe somebody can help me here, I'm still in the midst of unpacking and have no references available, but I believe '79 was the first year of thin-wall vacuum casting and externally balanced engines?
Yes I beleive your right George either 78-79 started the external balancing. Which would mean you cant use earlier internals in this block. Im not sure of the casting method either. This could also cause a problem with getting a flywheel. Track star what type of tranny and year truck is this going into?
I have the same exact engine in my truck (same block and heads). It's a 79 truck 460 with the desireable football shaped rod bolts, externally balanced. I couldn't tell you exactly what your engine came out of, as I got my engine from a friend of a friend. My engine has almost flat top pistons (5-10cc oval shaped dish). I'm not sure if they are stock pistons or not because most 460's I've ever see have huge dished pistons. Have you ever had your heads off trackstar? The heads are the 73 pedestal mount type with the smog bumps in the exhaust. From what I've heard you can gain 20-30 hp just by grinding the smog bumps out. Hope this helps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Nov-02 AT 01:39 PM (EST)]i havent taken the heads off yet. hoping to get it tore down this week. smog bumps eh? i'll remember that. this engine is going into my 75 Ford Elite(gran torino like) with a C6 behind it.
im thinking .030 over pistons, cam, intake, and carb, along with a little head work. early timing set too. stock exhaust manifolds for right now though. could i get reasonable power from this setup? what would your guesses be? any parts/combos recommended?
ANYTHING would be better than the stock 400 ive got under the hood now.
anyone know the factory power specs on this engine?
Hi , My guess , with those low compression heads (over 90cc) and the post 72 Heads with the smog bumos (same as mine) oh maybe 220 Hp. acording to my parts book. I just took the smog bumps out of my heads, but will be months before I can report on the prefromance of my 78 460 .030 over. Good luck. Cloudy
