I took a 1972 460 aprt today,D2VE heads.I noticed the pistons looked different than any other 460 pistons ive seen, looks like less dish in them for the open chamber D2VE heads. What would happen if i put D3VE head on this engine.Looks like it would give a higher compression ratio, any one know what i would get? Thanks for any input on this
I believe the D2 and D3 heads have the same size chambers, 95-97cc. Going to a set of C9 or D0VE heads will raise the compression. They have 75-77cc chambers.
Putting on D3 heads wouldn't raise the compression any, reguardless what piston is in there now. The combustion cambers on D3 heads are the same as the D2 heads. You need to put the early C8, C9 or DOVE heads to raise the compression. The compression ratio you have as it stands is 8.5 to 1 provding that the pistion you have are stock.

The pistons tha are in it now look like all other pistons in 460s ive seen except with a smaller dish,I know the engine has been rebulilt once, maybe someone put higher compresion pistons in it.Just looking at the open chamber D2VE heads it looks like the compresion would be lower with the same piston as used in other 460s. Can you get 460 pistons with different size dishes in them? THANKS
Yes, you can get pistons with different size dishes in them. I have a set of KB pistons that have 15cc dishes in them. Also, I believe the newer style 460 pistons have smaller dishes in them.
D2VE heads are the only open-chamber head ever made for the 385 and should be avoided for any performance application as the open chamber promotes detonation at higher compression ratios.
