Hello to all from a new member. Hoping I can get some help.
I have a 1999 Ranger 4x4 4.0 L Supercab. When I attempt to put the vehicle in 4 wheel drive it never drives the front wheels. The transfer case is engaging and the transfer case shift motor is functioning correctly. What is my problem and how much of a deal is it to fix ? It will go into low range and switch it to high range but it still never drives the front wheels.
Boy does this sound familiar. I had the very same problem (and so did a lot of others). Go to the first thread in the ranger forum called "Read first: Ranger technical information". It contains a thread called "1998-2000 4x4 pulse vacuum hubs".
It should tell you all you've ever wanted to know and then some. BTW the manual hub conversion which receives a lot of discussion is so easy to do you'll think you have to have screwed something up - it took me longer to jack it up and remove the wheels than to switch the hubs.
The manual hubs are about $100 plus shipping. As far as doing it yourself - it took me about half an hour (and that included jacking up the truck and removing the wheels and test driving afterwards to make sure it worked) and I have absolutely no mechanical training. (BTW no special tools required)
Just ordered a set of manual locking hubs off ebite....$110 delivered to Colorado. Even did a trial run on the disassembly. Too easy...now if I just had them here. Thanks for all your help.
