OK, all you guys up north, don't laugh -- my 86 6.9's heater is pumping out just slightly warmer air than the outside temp. Hasn't really been a problem until the last couple days when we've seen morning temps at or below freezing.
Could this be a thermostat problem?? How hard is it to replace?? From doing a search on this topic, sounds like the only replacement part would be a Ford thermostat and not any autoparts store brand replcement.
'hope you don't mind me 'piggybacking' on this thread, but I have a similar issue with my 88 7.3 The gauge usually runs about 1/4 of the way up from cold , but it takes a very long time to get heat from the heater and it doesn't seem to get as hot as a few years ago when I bought the truck. I'll try the things suggested already, but I was thinking thermostat too.
The heater core is a straight through flow...... so yes it sounds like it is plugged. You can try cleaning it in place by back flushing in both directions until a very good flow is accomplished.
