Now I have a question that goes along with that. In F600/700 trucks, they use 370/429 ci engines. These trucks will run down the highway at road speed. Ryder, Uhaul, etc, with a GVW up just under CDL requirements, which I beleive is 24K.
If a F600/700 can use a 370, why does a Class A or C motorhome or cutaway, come with 460's? What don't I understand? Is it because they use a light duty auto (compared to an Allison)?
the license class has nothing to do with engine size. motor homes came with bigger engines because of the mountain ranges that most travelers encounter. the class is rated by 1) weight and 2) brakes (air brakes require a CDL) I personally have a class A, I was a over the road truck driver.
They use light truck trannys and accessory drives on the front of the engine. The 370/429 large truck engines ude larger crankshaft snouts and must use the larger accessories to go aaalong with them. They also have a larger rear crank snout which is different from the lighter duty engines.
They make less power than the 460's and make up for it with more tranny gears and steeper rearend gears.
