Air Leaking by floor

I just noticed the sound of air leaking under the center of the dash. It stops just before the truck shifts and does it all the time, cold or at operating temp in the 2 lower gears. Could this be the uppipes maybe? Not sure since it is so low but it is definately very LOW under the dash. Thanks

Are you sure it does it when its warmed up? It sounds like the exhaust back pressure valve is semi closed, which makes the air under the dash noise your describe. From what I can describe, an up pipe leak sounds like a tsst tsst tsst tsst and depends on rpms, whearase the exhaust back pressure valve sounds more like opening an airvalve. It would somewhat depend on how much throttle you puch, as enough throttle SHOULD open it back up, I say should because its supposed to, but it depends on what the exhaust back pressure sensor says, and if it sticks. If its sticking you would noticed reduced power. Since your in MN, your probably seeing some pretty cold temps all the time, which could trigger the ebpv to semi close. But if you take it for a 20 minute + drive, it should be up to temperature for sure. One sure fire way to tell if it is or not, would be to disconect the connector on the turbo pedistal for the ebpv. If the noise goes away, then Im right, and if you dont noticed a major reduction in power, its even working correctly. If it still does it, im wrong!

Heres a picture of the pedistal with the turbo off.

If you look right above the blue dot, theres a connector, thats the one you would unhook to make the ebpv not function and test my theory. It always defaults open, so it would cause no issue, besides a soft code, that should not set your SES light.

Mike,
Yes it even does it when the motors up to temp.I thought it was the valve until it kept doing it after a 15 mile run. I will check it anyway just to make sure. Thanks for the info and pic.

there is a wire locking clip on that plug..flip the lock back then pull the plug out..hate to see you break it..if it does stop that sound..you EBPS tube is most likely plugged with soot or have holes in it..here is a link to clean the tube

Ron I just got back from 2 days out of town and read your response. I just had the tube cleaned and the sensor replaced last July, could it possibly plug up that soon. Thanks

i guess it is possable..but i wouldnt think it would that fast..could be a bad sensor or the tube may have a hole in it..they do rust and get pin holes in them....just try to unplug it to see if it goes away...then let us know..

Hey mndiesel, mine does that too, I think it's the EBPV partially closing and it should go away with more throttle. I use it for a exhaust brake so I can duplicate the sound manually. I don't know why it does it at temp other than its cold outside and it's being commanded to close. Let us know if unplugging the EBPV makes it go away.

Don't overlook some leaking up-pipes as mentioned earlier.
Bad design, makes them leak within a couple of weeks of installation.
Get some of the bellowed up pipes.

I wasnt trying to make him overlook that, just wanted to isolate the ebpv setup from the mix. They have two distinct sounds IMO, and from what he described, it sounded like the ebpv partially closing. I agree with you on the subject of crappy uppies, which is why both of us have bellowed pipes now.

Thanks to all that have responded. I will try unplugging that plug if I can get to it. I had back surgery in May and am still having issues. What is the best way to look for the uppipe leaks, underneath or from the top. Also do they go to the back of the turbo. Just thought I would ask so I don't have to lay on the ground if I don't have too. Thanks

Underneath sadly enough, maybe you can have someone else look for you. Take a flashlight, and look up, to were the two up pipes go into the back of the turbo. There will be black soot on the pipes, and sometimes down at the manifold aswell. If it leaks REALLY bad, you can see it on the firewall behind the turbo, like i posted in another thread, http://shop.blackwidowdiesel.com/pro...&productId=304 is a source for the new up pipes. Ive put a set on my truck, and I dont think it should be attempted by you, untill your backs in better shape, theres a lot of up and downs that i had to do to get mine on. The first times the hardest!

Here is a picture of an E450 with leaking up pipes. The doghouse was removed for easy access. On the F series it's not nearly so easy, but this picture is great for pointing out what you need to look for.
See the blackened area on the upper flanges and the soot deposits on the bell housing? The compressable o-ring gasket always leaks right there.
