Transmission fault
On the way home tonight my odometer light flashed on saying "trans fault" and stayed on the whole 2 mile drive home. The O/D light flashed off and on the whole ride as well. No noticeable difference in shifts or anything though. after i got home i turned the truck off and restarted it, drove it around the block, and everything was fine. any ideas what may have caused this? its unusually cold here (teens with single digit wind chills). related? i've always had the 4.2 V6 "knock" sound when in gear---the diesel sound, but all dealers have told him thats normal. 2006 F150, 4.2 V6, auto, 16,000 miles. thanks in advance.

With the weather being that cold, it will take your trans. longer to come up to temp. Your torque converter lockup will not come on if the tranny is not up to temp. It is possible that the computer was commanding lockup, but because it was not up to temp. it would not come on. Your best bet would be to have a scanner put on it and to check for codes.
