OKay guys I have a 2002 f150 that is tapping bad. Do any of you know of a fix or is it time to R/R the motor?
I have also noticed the rps like to jump between 850 and 1000 constantly and at times the oil gauge will bottom out for 1-2 seconds

NO fault codes other than O2 sensors but they were removed when the exhaust was chopped off by the previous owner
sounds like either a valve hitting a piston, broken timing chain guide, or even could be the flex plate loose. Had a similar problem years ago on a dodge dakota where the flex plate was loose and made a loud noise. Do you have an engine stethoscope? I would try to get/rent one maybe from auto zone. what part of the engine is the noise coming from.

The noise seems to be coming from the top where the valve covers are and the other tap im not sure. The PO said it just started doing that one day and he parked it.

I would pull the valve covers and look for anything broken ie; cam followers, dropped valve, timing chain loose. Its definitely an internal engine problem
