Porting the heads...

This is a guy who does it privately, he seems to do good work as other people have had their heads and intakes ported by him. I am going to look around first though. Thanks for the link!

Porting the heads...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Nov-02 AT 09:29 AM (EST)]>A current trend there is
>two engines; a stocker for the registration process and back
>with the real engine after registrations.

Ummmm...you got me thinking on that one...Since I'm gonna put some rebuilt heads on (D0VE-C, ported with a little help from the 460 forum at FTE), headers, and while I'm in there I'm gonna put in a new cam, timing set and lifters, (gonna go with a stright up set as suggested by the fine folks at FTE),...I can put a non EGR intake manifold on with a Holley 750 CFM carb.,...The truck has at least 126,000 miles and it's not much farther to a complete rebuild...so I'm thinking...I know of a 460 at the wrecking yard from a '76' T-Bird and I can work at my leisure since I got a running engine in the truck now...I get a bonus check next week...I can swap engines this next spring or early summer...
... ... ...:-X23 ...Ooops, sorry. Every time I think, I fall asleep...Now were was I...Ummm...

Porting the heads...

A word of warning about amature porting. Back when I used to be a 5.0 mustang nut I talked to a lot of people who ported their own heads. All the people who had noticed gains, did so by just removing smog bumps, and polishing.
Then there were the guys that hoged out the ports to the max, and their times went DOWN!!!! Porting involves many hours of practicing what works and what doesent, and an understanding of gas flow and back flow etc...

Just thought I throw this in. I just don't want you to have a bad head porting experience. If your guy hasn't done a lot of 460 heads, or if he doesen't flow test, just have him remove the bumps and polish.
Good luck!!

Porting the heads...

I did quite a lot of research before choosing a shop to do the work and buying parts. I went to 3 different shops and talked to the people there. First shop, didn't like the prices or the time frame of work(2-3months)*(plus I saw no Ford stuff there)*. Second shop, the people working there were quite honest with me. They said that they don't do much work on Fords, only BB Mopar and some big and small block Chevys. They recommended I go to another machine shop, which does a lot of work on Ford stuff. This third shop is the one I chose to do all my machining. They were quite knowledgeable in Ford BB engines and their prices were reasonable. The porting they did for me cost $250. as you can see, they concentrated on the exhaust more than the intake, which is where most of the improvement is needed. Here's the flow sheet from a set of D0VE's I had ported a t a local machine shop. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=5042&.jpg

Porting the heads...

I have just purchased some c9ve a heads to replace my d3ve a2a heads on my 74 crew cab with 79 460 block and (was told) has 429 crank.

I was all set to do a home porting job, remove the smog, bump and really concentrate on the exahust area to get a balence flow.

But after reading the above I not sure to try and tackle it.

I am told I most likly have 8:1 now with my d3 heads but with the c9 heads and a mild new cam and cam gears/chain I am told I would be around 9:1, ok for regular pump gas.

Does this sound correct on compression? I still want to run 87 oct reg gas in this truck.

thanks

Thanks for the info. Nick. Thats just about all I want to attempt anyway. I know enough to not go in too deep over my head and ruin everything. Remove the bumps and polish is all I'm looking for but I appreciate your advice. Please feel free to throw any other tidbits of info. my way. With links and people sharing info. from experience I'm confident I can do this. Like I said above, I'm not pressed for time so I can take my time. Looking forward to my project actually. Kinda like therapy you know? But still, I'd rather be fishing.

Fishing or almost anything else beats breathing black dust from porting. Don't polish the intake ports. Leave them smooth, but not polished to provide some turbulance in aiding the fuel/air blend.

One otther thought - if you want to do the porting yourself, Scott (see web site link earlier in this post) will port one chamber for you then you can copy his work on the other seven chambers. You can also follow this approach then take the heads to a shop and have the finish work done on the flow bench. This will save you some labor costs.

I just went to an aquaintance's(sp?) house and he showed me how to port heads nicely. He also gave me a 350?! He has a 327 with 14:1 compression ratio. The pistons fit into the valves, they are cut perfectly.

Ah, yes. And when my truck is finished, it will get me to where the fish are in no time. I use to be a boiler maker/welder. I've had my fill of smoke, soot, fumes and dust to last me for a while. I'll just use one of them dust masks.

Yes, I've heard that too or read about that. In fact it was probably here. Thanks again.

BTW, I visisted your web site. Very nice Bronco you got there. And that power plant! Good Goly Miss Moly!
