Why can't header manufacturers make something like these for our trucks?

Because it would make perfect sense, and we don't want any of that nonsense going on!!!

 

I guess, but I don't want any more long tubes, but think I would go for a set of shorties designed like those.

I know for a fact that there are shortie Tri-Y headers out there. The cast headers were on early factory hot rod motors.

 

Heck, I've got a set of long tubes on my 352 I'll trade in a minute for a set of cast iron logs! I'll throw in my first born for a set of cast iron headers.

 

John, wouldn't the shorty headers from Sanderson be just what you're looking for ? They're pricey, but seem well made. DinosaurFan, on his son's computer this time....

 

Yep I have to agree with Dino....Sanderson makes alot of cool stuff.. and damn good craftsmanship to boot.....But you pay the price like he said....

And anyone that has a set of Long tube headers....that wants rid of them..Didnt take the prep time either with the header or the heads for leakage.... I have been running a cheap set of Headman Headers on my 395"er since 72 and NEVER leak one!! They originally came with welding slag all over the port flange...with a couple of passes on my surface grinder....and making sure the heads were square... and bolted them up...

The motor has been pulled down 2 times over the year for misc..upgrades...a new set of cheap Mr. Gasket... Gaskets and back on the road again....and the truck is driven hard.....LOL.. and I meen hard.. JMO..

Sanderson's are cheap compared to what the cast shortie headers cost, that is if you can find any. I remember in 1969 removing the factory cast shortie headers from my 1966 Mercury Cyclone with it's 427 and replacing them with regular headers. I couldn't give the cast ones away and they sat in the base auto shop for several months until the Sarge threw them away. How stupid was that? So very short sighted in my youth. Even thought I was still bullet proof then, even with 2 sets of puckered scars saying I was wrong.

 

What is the advantage of the shorties other than more RPM oriented and extra room?

 

Personally, I could give a hoot about rpms, it is simplicity and getting away from the stock log manifold. I have not been as fortunate as some of the others here have been, I have had to replace several starters. The long tube Hooker Super comps make a 15 minute job drag into hours of removing the header to be able to change the starter then rehanging it. The bottom row of bolts require you to use this tiny wrench moving it about 1/4" at a time.

I would just like a manifold improvement, at the time I thought headers was the answer.

I would attempt two driver side 360 manifolds to see if I could make them work.

John, couldn't agree more... I'll go one step further, I think the long tube headers, and their proximity to the starter is what's causing the starter to go out.

 

Actually a shortie tri-Y does help the torque.

 

Ford Powertrain Applications also makes shorty's and tri-Y's for FE's. Don't know if they'll fit a truck though.

And worth every penny. The FPA's are far and away better made than the Sandersons.
