3 Speed manual trans ID
Hi guys
I live in the Netherlands and drive a long bed '71 2 wheeler F-100, with a V8, 302 cid, 3 on the three.
The transmission is making a lot of noise in first and second gear, so i got me a used Ford 3.03 RAT toploader trans and an overhaul kit from the US to get going.
I was under the impression that this Ford 3.03 RAT toploader was the standard trans for Ford trucks from that area ... however.. horror struck me when i went under my truck and found the trans there tagged HEG !!!
Today i read on a transmission forum that some 66-71 trucks with 6-1/2 foot long bed where indeed fitted with a HEG 3.03 Toploader type trans.
Could anyone confirm that ... and more important .. can i replace the HEG type with the RAT type trans ??? (the RAT has a 18 inch long 28 spline output shaft)
Many thanks
John

Horror?
Many of the same parts are used HEG/RAT, as both are 3.03 3 speed all syncro transmissions.
The following = same = HEG/RAT
input/output shaft bearings the same
syncro shoes the same
extension housing seal and bushing the same
1st gear syncro blocking ring the same (there's only one)
2-3 syncro blocking rings (2) MAY be the same, they may not..depends on the ID tag number (prolly missing) Difference = 2-3 syncro blocker rings = 33 teeth OR 36 teeth
input shaft (15) & countershaft roller bearings (50) the same
gasket set the same
small parts kit the same (small parts kit = snap rings, washers, etc.)
input shaft seal MAY or may not be the same...again, it depends on the trans ID number. There's 4 different ones...so it depends on the ID number, NOT just whether the trans is a HEG or RAT. HEG's use 1, RAT's use 3.
> > If I missed anything from the kit...post it...I'll see if they're same...or not.

Thanks Bill !!!,
would you than agree with me that the HEG type trans under the truck (1971) right now is not the original one ???... that for some reason the previous owner (from San José, CA) replaced the original RAT trans with a 1964/66 HEG type.
Since the inside of both the HEG and RAT is so much the same, would it then be save to assume that the outside measurements of both types are the same too ?? Making it therefore save to remove the HEG trans and rebuild the used 1971 RAT trans i bought in the US and bolt that one under the truck.
Or would you rather suggest to rebuild the HEG type using the RAT overhaul kit ??
Would you also happen to know if a Tremec build RAT 3.03 transmission is interchangeable with the original Ford RAT 3.03 ??
Many thanks in advance

Shop Manuals = faxonautolit.com / Faxon also sells sales brochures / owners manuals, etc.
The HEG trans was not used after 1966.
Is the trans painted green or red? Rebuilders would paint transmissions green or red before installing them.
Rebuilders weren't letter/number conscience, either. If it worked, in it went.
I have little knowledge on swaps..of any kind, and usually stay away from threads regarding them.
I don't know diddly about Tremac's. In fact, I never heard of Tremac's before signing on to FTE.
I'm a dinosaur...and like things the way "The Deuce" built them.
I can understand upgrading the braking system, but that's about it.
