I have a 1988 F-250 with a 460. I am told that the inline pump is not producing the right pressure for the system. I will have to replace it with another. MY question is, will the MSD high pressure pump work in this situation, or should I stay with the recommended?
Your system operates under 47psi I beleive. So yo will need a pump that can do this psi, and still deliver the volume you need. There are pumps available to the 5.0 Mustang guys that will mate right up, such as the Vortech T-rex pump. You must remember that you need special fittings to hook up to the Ford fuel lines. And they are plastic so no cutting and clamping.

Most repair manuals will tell you the standard pressure. Most EFI systems average about 30lbs at an idle and around 38 to 40 at W.O.T.
You can also check the max pressure by removing and plugging the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator while it is idling. This will give you the max pressure but shutting off the return line to the tank.
You will need a fuel pressure guage that screws onto the test port(Looks like a tire valve on the fuel rail) to check this. Be careful when removing it from the test port, most of them have a relief button on them, not to spray any fuel on the hot exhaust or .
