ok i have a 86 f250 5 speed 4x4 manual locking hubs 460 4 barel
here is my quistion it will not seem to lock the hubs for 4 wheel drive they do work i do not have a manual for it can some one send me instrution on engaging 4 wheel drive
Manual hubs have a feature that will let you activate the lock or free action in the hub.
Twist the "handle" until the arrow moves from free to lock.
This will lock the hubs to the axleshafts.
You have to place the trucks transfer case from 2hi to 4hi or 4lo to get the front driveshaft to turn the front diff.
You should stop the truck to move the transfer case lever into the 4hi position.
did all that can hear the hubs trying to ingage but they wont i lock the hubs put the truck in nutral the transfercase in 4 hi then press the clutch in and put it in 1st let the clutch out and the rearwheels spin i just spent 1200 on all new 4x4 parts put in at a ford dealer it dose not seem to spin or move the front wheels
Check and see of the sticker is still on the drivers side sun visor.
If not, it is pretty much turn the lock **** to lock. engage 4wd lever to 4high and go. Of you need to go to 4low, make sure the truckis completely stopped and in park/neutral. Passing through neutral on the transfer case will completely disengage the drive train to get to 4L. 4L is not needed as much unless you are in some trouble. You can safely go in and out of 4h as needed even while the truck is in motion as long as the hubs are locked in on an auto, never tried it on a manual.
If the hubs are not locking in then the hubs have either been over greased or are just worn out and need replacing. It is actually very simple to service them as long as yo have the hub nut tool.
Edit, just saw the new post, it sounds like they either over greased them or did not put them back together right.
can any one email me a copy of the sticker that shows how its supose to work
It's very simple. Turn the hubs to "lock", pull the lever in the floor back to "4H". and you are in 4wd.
If you want to test the transfer case, have the hubs unlocked, and the transfer case in "2H". Reach under the truck and grab the front driveshaft. You should be able to turn it easily. Then get in the cab and put the transfer case in "4H". Reach under the truck and try to turn the driveshaft. It should not turn.
