hello first time user of this , i have an 01 7.3. i purchased it used two years ago and i only put 5k mile on it, rarely drive it. this past weekend it seems to have a knocking noise that had become louder. at idle it more obvious especially when its cold. i thought rod knock, i out a stethescope and i could hear a slight knock in the pan. but i also heard the knock on the pass side rocker cover. the exhasut seems to smell more than usual. could the knick be an injectore going bad. or does anyone know what else i should check? it seems to run normal no misfires.
How old is your oil and how cold were the temps outside? Did the knock get quieter when the engine warmed up? A cold diesel is usually noisy compared to a gas motor.
An injector is a likely cause but I'd make sure it still sounds bad with fresh oil and a warm motor.
Also how long has the fuel been in the tank? does it have an antigel, biocide, anti moisture additive in it(Diesel Kleen, Stanadyne,etc...) since yours does not see a whole lot of miles a half full tank can condensate and leave water in the fuel. Water does not play well with our injectors. niether does the fungus that can grow in diesel fuel when not used in a timely manner.
How old is the oil? oil in an unused truck can also condensate. you must run a diesel up to operating temperature for a long enough period as to allow any condensation to boil out of the oil pan every few weeks . The major systems of a PSD (fuel injectors and lubrication) all work off the oil system. it should be as fresh as possible. Just because you do not put many miles on your truck does not mean that you shouldnt change your oil at least one or two times per year.
if you haven't done the in tank mod or have a fuel bowl leak. air in the fuel line will make the injectors knock, especially noticable at an idle. see if there is any fuel leaking behind the fuel bowl and do the in tank mod 1st
