I am looking at a 2001 four door short bed 4x4 with a 7.3 and auto with 202,000 miles on it, is there anything specific that I need to be looking for when I inspect the truck, I have driven it and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. This is my first diesel pick up and I don't want to overlook anything. Any thoughts on the mileage, Ive heard they last forever, and what kind of fuel mileage can I expect out of it? Thanks in advance
You might want to ask this question in the 7.3 forum. More likely to get the replies you need there.
In my opinion, the 7.3 is pretty much bullet proof. The weak link is the transmission, find out if it's the orignal and if it's been serviced and at what intervals. Was it used for heavy towing? You also should check out the frontend (ball joints). After that many miles, if they haven't been replaced they probably need to be and that's around $1500.
