I have discovered that the Brake and the ground are reversed on my truck 7 way plug. I have a 2001 ford 250 v-10. I went to reverse it but thought I should consult with the experts here. Where is the best place to do this this? I does not look like I can unplu the two wires and reverse them. I guess I have to cut an reverse and splice. Is there a better way?
I am pretty certain that they are reversed. When I plug in my new fiifth wheel The prodigy brake controler does not indicate that it is connected. Then looking at the trailer wiring diagrams, the plug on my truck 1 is the brake and 2 is the ground. Then when it comes to correcting this problem. Directly behind my plug the wiring gets plugged in to the 7 way then about another foot it plugs in again. So I am not sure were I should reverse the wires.
Make sure you're looking at the plug the right way. All of the wiring diagrams that Mr Jimi linked are looking at the plug from the back, where the wires connect.
If you're looking at the plug from the rear of the vehicle, where the pins are, those diagrams are going to appear reversed. If the plug is stock, the pinout will appear on the plug cover.
I would be really surprised to find a stock plug miswired. Those things are put together by machines in batches of 1000's, most likely. I would far more likely suspect that your trailer plug is mis-wired.
Check the trailer too... chances are the truck's plug is straight from the factory, where its pretty much impossible to have a backwards plug. Everything is mass produced and is plug-n-play, with only one way to fit. If anything was incorrectly wired, chances are its the trailer.
Like the person mentioned above, remember that the plug is going to be reversed on each of the two plugs, so when they are put together everything matches. I guess I'm pretty much echoing everyone else :P
Well ok Looking at the cover ( drawing on the cover)on my 7 way 2 is ground 1 is the brake. I have power on my new Prodigy brake controller but when pugged in to my new 5er It indicates no connected. I pulled the trailer home with my friends truck and brakes were fine. Maybe I should try a new plug first. Also by the way all my lights work on the trailer when my truck is connected.
Just get the schematic for your plug layout. Have a friend run the controls and use a Multimeter or test light to determine that all of the Pins are operating in accordance to the Schematic. Obviously you know the lights work, but are they working off of the correct pins?
I found the problem. I was finely able to unplug the wire that plug into the back of the 7 way plug and the prong for the trailer brake was corrided and broken off. Got a new harrness and plug ordered from Etrailer. Thanks everyone for your responses.
