Question cold trans. shifting

I have a question about my 01 7.3. When i start it up and drive it, it doesn't shift into overdrive until it warms up after about 7 or so miles of driving. Is this normal? Thanks, Jeff

My truck does the same thing. I read in an earlier post that it is to help warm the engine up.

Mine does it also. I hate it. That's the last thing I want for my cold truck - rev higher. I'd rather be colder in the cab for an extra 5 minutes than my truck running 300 - 400 rpm's higher when it is cold. I try to stay under 2000 rpm's when mine is cold. That's about 50 mph until she kick's into O.D.

Mine does it too and it's annoying!!! I've thought about getting an electric heater and hooking it to a timer and pointing it at my tranny. Now that I think about it, I've got the hardware... I think a mechanics creeper might be handy for pulling that setup out from under the truck in the morning.

It does shift into OD, but the T/C wont lock. The slipping heats the trans fluid faster. Thats why it seems like it wont go into od, but I've watched my rpm's and it definately does. Not much of a difference from 3rd though.

Thanks for the notes. I was afraid that my tranny was going south! I always plug my block heater in when i gets cold. It still doesn't shift into od until warm up. I try to stay under 50 mph until it shifts. Once warmed up, all is fine. Jeff

Its based off oil temperature IIRC, not trans temperature.

I hate when it does that. The first winter I had it, I also thought trans was going out. It usually doesn't do it as long as I give it time to warm up before driving.

Are you sure? In many other vehicles TCC lockup is based off trans temp. If it's below 130* F the TCC won't lockup.

It's based on both engine and trans temps.

According to my evo II i have noticed my trans won't lock the T/C until the trans temps get to about 64 degrees or so on it. I also noticed today it was in the teens here and the ebpv stayed closed till the engine oil temp got to 144 degrees.

My '02 used to do the same thing on real cold mornings.
I solved that problem buy installing a small strip heater that attaches to the bottom of the trans. pan and has an AC cord/plug attached to it. I simply plug the block heater in along with the trans. heater in for the night - it's all on a heavy duty time - and walla, the trans. is warmed up like the engine and it shifts much better.
I purchased the heater from the internet by using Google to find a supplier.
I have been very satisfied with the setup.

Good luck,

Thumbs up Temp Ranges?

While we're on the subject:

1) Does anyone know what the minimum Trans and Coolant temps must be to allow the TCC engagement? (looking for official Ford released data)

2) The Ford, factory AC heater plug in found just behind my front bumper: Does that heat the oil or the coolant?

As mentioned, I am still a newbie to diesel technology.
