Question Injectors

This question has been thrown out there a couple of times. I hope someone has as idea. I know that atleast myself and two or three others will appreciate any help. Is there a way to test injectors with out having a scanner to do a buzz test? I would like to test mine, but I dont have a buzz tester.

If there is no other way what is the cheapiest reliable scanner I can get to do the buzz test? Thanks

the scan tool will do an electrical injector test, this test the solonoids and wiring up to the hydraulics portion. you must have a scan tool to do it.
as far as i know there is no way to accuratly "bench test" an injector.
and you are really limited to any in truck testing as well. the scanner will do the elec test and a cylinder contribution test but the buzz test will only point you in the direction of a fault, you still have to diag whether its a wire or the injector, and the cylinder cont test merely cuts power to each injector one at a time and moniters cps signal to see if you have a low contributing cylinder. this will still only point you in the direction of the problem, a low cont. code could be caused by a weak inj, or low compression or a number of things. what exactly are you looking to gain from the test?

I recently had a IDM fry and since then I have been trouble shooting a rought idle and really bad fuel economy. I heard someone on here say that symptoms like that may mean a stuck injector, so that is what I was trying to figure out. Would a buzz test show a stuck injector?

the buzz test will tell you if the solonoids are activating, depending on what is wrong internally it may or may not. the cylinder contribution would be the next route, it will point you to one particular cylinder that isnt running as well as the others. from there you can determine if its an injector or base engine problem. some people will swap the suspect injector with the next cylinder to see if the code follows. that pretty much guarentees you the answer on the injector, there is no way to physicly condem an injector without ruling out all other systems. the technology wasnt there for these engines. the 6.0 has alot more injector diagnostic capabilities but unfortunatly non of it was transfereable to the 7.3's so we are stuck in the stone age to diagnose an advanced motor.

As much as I despise the stealership would it be best to take it to them to find out whats going on? Those scanners you are talking about seem to be pretty expensive. What prices have you seen them go for?

they go for as low as 200 to over 1000 on ebay. brand new they are around 3500 with all accesories, here is a link to one up for bid right now, it seems to be a complete kit.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-...spagenameZWDVW

if you go to the dealer they will charge you at least 1.5 hour diag to start which at our current rate is 120 bucks. from that point any more diag other then pulling codes and a few quick checks is extra. you might be able to get them to work with you if you tell them all you want is to "retrieve any dtc's", perform an "injector electrical test", and do a "cylinder contribution test" from that point you can do the rest yourself with a little patience. if you give them the truck for them to check out the rough idle and fuel economy they will be more worried about selling you flushes and mainanence then digging in to a real problem.
