Steering Column

When somebody says a Steering Column is 30X inches, from where to where ?

Is it from the front of the spline to the top of the column before the steering wheel ?

I have a '49

I have the Toyota Box installed and bought the Borg U-Joint for the Toyota box to match the GM 40-something spline 1" diameter column.

My Column needs to be Column shift and I'd like (but don't need) Column Ignition Key.

The Steering Column I have is too long (35 inches spline to rear of steering wheel) I need a shorter one. Even if I lose my belly, it's too long.

I've seen the threads on Columns but I'd like some experience with the Toyota box in the Bonus-Built applications.

Happy New Year you bunch 'a Knuckleheads....

Good Stuff Kusto - Thanks

I bought a 78 monte carlo column from Joe's Bargin's from e-bay.The column is 30" long.He will set the column up however you like.I told him that I wanted a perfect condition tilt column with key and shifter on column.I received what I asked for.He will paint columns black but I wanted my red so I got it unpainted.Cost me 160 dollars shipped. His phone number is (586) 203-8968 he is located in Michigan.

Dawg,

I forgot to mention in my PM to you, I mounted my Toyota steerintg box a bit uncoventionally. Instead of mounting it in the original location I mounted it up ahead of the axle;

In one of the FTE tech articles, there was lots of info on swapping columns. Based on that info, I found an early 90's, square body jeep cherokee with the factory 30" tilt column at the pull-a-part. GM made the columns for jeep back then, and they're completely interchangable with any standard GM part. They have a key, tilt, cruise, dimmer and wipers. Cut the mounting flange off the bottom of the column and you're set. Check my gallery to see how I mounted it, and then check Bobby's to see a better top mount than I did. The only problem with the stock GM column is the dimmer switch. It's a rod operated switch, halfway down the column, and it sticks out of the left side. It's alittle ugly, and needs some sort of cover, or remove it, disable the rod, and run a floor dimmer switch. The ignition switch is in the same area, but on top of the column, so it's easier to cover. I saw a car with a black leather cover over the bottom of the column, from the tilt area to the floor, base ball stitched, and it was sharp. I might try that. (Honey, let's go buy some black leather....Ohh baby!)

Whats unconventional about an erector set?

Seriously Bobby thats a work of art. I hope you remembered to measure twice cut once on that setup. Was that necessary to clear the big caddy block?

I never mentioned it but I always wondered why Bobby mounted the box so he'd have to turn left to turn right and right to turn left.....

I suspect his shifter is set up in a similar fashion.......... Hee Hee !!!

I put a Flamming River 30" column in mine pickup, it had a shifter on the column, tilt, flashes. Even though it was a bit pricey, but it did the job perfectly, there's a picture in my gallery.

The old truck is a bit of a Frankenstein erector set....LOL

Well, I started out on this project by installing the engine. I managed to fab my engien mounts and have room for exhaust, etc. This was back in 2002 or 2003. then I started thinking about steering, etc. While searching the net I found some articles about the Toyota steering box, I also stumbled on John Noilons FTE article about installing a Mustang gas tank, which of course led me to FTE (after that I was hooked)

....anyway I found a toyo box and installed it. It cleared the Caddy exhaust but the inner power steering hose only had a 1/4" clearance from the exhaust manifold. I thought about modifying the engine mounts and raising the engine slightly but in the end decided to move the steering box.

I'm driving the truck now and so far, so good on the steering. I do want to replace my column with a cool, mostly chrome column from a 63 Buick Riviera which would allow me to move my intermediate shaft over the top of the frame rail and allow me to install my chrome headers on the big Caddy....woohoo

Dawg....reversed steering and shifter......it makes for a great theft deterrent...lol

I was told to get a 32", bought an IDIDIT and it turned out too long, I ended up shortening the column by apx. 1 3/4".
The u-joint I used fit the toy spline end at the gearbox but had a 3/4" "double-D" fitting on the other. So I just cut the shaft and reground the "double-D" and redrilled the hex key hole.
If you buy anything like this you can always go shorted after a test fit...it's a little more difficult to add length.
I hope you find a good setup....Ed
