Airaid air intake problem

All, I bought my ‘01 5.4L screw in June ‘01. In July ‘01 I put an “Airaid” intake system – like K&N’s FIPK - on my truck. Anyway, about a week ago (~Feb 15 ‘02) my truck was dead in my driveway. It would turn over, you could smell gas, but it would not start. I called Ford roadside assistance, and 3 hours later a rollback arrived and took my truck to the local dealer (Town and Country Ford, Bessemer, AL – they did a great job). I don’t know a lot about fuel injection, but the idle air sensor (or something like that) had died. After replacing the sensor (under warranty) the service people showed me the ¾ inch (O.D.) rubber hose supplied with the Airaid kit that comes off the main pipe and goes to the idle parts was collapsing under vacuum. The hose would flatten out, and strangle the engine. The hole in the main air intake pipe going to the ¾ inch idle air hose is only about ¼ inch. I called Airaid and they were not much help, only stating that the purpose of the small hole was to eliminate a whistling problem. I have since drilled out the hole to ½ inch, and replaced the hose without further problems – we’ll see in another 6 months.
